History
APM Terminals Mumbai Private Ltd. (APM) is a joint venture company of APM Terminals and Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR). APM has signed a license agreement with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) to build and operate for the next 30 years a state of the art common user container terminal at Nhava Sheva.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust has been a primary gateway for the movement of containerized trade from India. JNPT operated two container terminals and one bulk terminal, but due to the exponential growth of containerized cargo the port trust decided to redevelop the bulk terminal into a container terminal. Previously the bulk terminal consisted of two mechanized berths of 500 meters & 212 meters of quay length designed for handling dry bulk cargo in vessels up to 70,000 DWT.
The consortium of APM Terminals and CONCOR won the competitive bid for the terminal and a joint venture company APM Terminals Mumbai Pvt. Ltd was incorporated by the consortium to build and operate the container terminal for a period of 30 years on BOT basis.
